The music school “Dr. Vojislav Vuckovic” was officially opened in Nis in 1947 even though the first data about the school can be traced back to 1925 when the first elementary music school “Kornelije” – Nis was founded. On the initiative of a Czech musician, professor Pohorno a Musical assembly was formed with a task to gather together with friends of music, amateurs, and professionals and to cultivate a musical sense and culture of the city of Nis. In the autumn of 1949, in compliance with the decision of the Ministry of Education of the People`s Republic of Serbia, the Town elementary music school evolved into a State secondary music school in which theory and instrumental departments were established.
The school was founded by the People`s Republic of Serbia Ministry of Education decree no.38558 of October 10, 1947. It was registered with the Registry of the Commercial District Court in Nis, decree no.373/73 (register extract 524).
The unique registration number is 717624, code of organization type is 12. The school was accredited by the Republic Committee for education and physical culture decree no. 372173 of January 13, 1974.
Successfully overcoming every obstacle the Music assembly “Kornelije” – Nis became a major factor in the city and after the Second World War based on twenty years of musical experience a State music school “Dr. Vojislav Vuckovic” was founded in Nis in 1947. Thus, Nis came to be associated with the so-called “big cities” while the Music school was expanding its scope and improving its status. The school was at this time the only specialized music school in southern Serbia. The major purpose of the school was to offer elementary musical education to as many musically talented children as possible. The school comprised three departments: string, piano, and wind department.
The first teaching staff consisted of five teachers. The first principal of the school was professor Stojan Andric, while members of the teaching staff were Stevan Guscin – music theory professor, Alisa Ivkovic – professor of piano and solo singing, Darinka Marinkovic – piano professor, and Bozidar Stefanovic – violin teacher. The school was providing not only education for future professional musicians but also the cultivation of musical experience for music lovers and the community as a whole.
The school is very proud of its students who are nowadays recognized experts, music pedagogues, opera singers, orchestra members, composers, music editors, soloists and members of musical ensembles or school managers. Even more important than the continuity of its existence is the achievement and outcomes that the Music school “Dr. Vojislav Vuckovic” and its students and teachers have made so far winning numerous prizes at national and international competitions as well as rewards for successful individual performances and outstanding pedagogical accomplishments.
Currently, there are 91 professors teaching at elementary and secondary school levels in 7 departments: piano, strings, winds, solo singing, accordion, guitar, and theory department.
